Tech Startup Pancopia Lands State CIT Award

HAMPTON, VA; June 13, 2016 – Pancopia, Inc., an environmental R&D and consulting company, was awarded a $50,000 matching grant from the Center for Innovative Technology (CIT), a technological business initiative program run by the Commonwealth of Virginia. Secretary of Technology Karen Jackson noted, “The Virginia technology community submitted nearly 150 proposals during this solicitation, an increase of more than 66 percent over the previous round in 2015. The awards made in this round will continue to produce the exciting outcomes already demonstrated by the portfolio, including intellectual property created and licensed, job and company creation, and follow-on investment.”  The press release from Governor’s McAulliffe’s office with details of the award announcement can be accessed at https://governor.virginia.gov/newsroom/newsarticle?articleId=15591.

The grant will enhance Pancopia’s research and development of a new technology to remove nitrogen from wastewater at one third the cost of current technologies. Early research that established feasibility of this technology was funded by NASA through a Phase I SBIR contract in 2016.   Development of this environmentally friendly technology will decrease the amount of nutrient runoff pollution, be more energy efficient, easier to operate, and reduce costs to about one-third the price of current systems.

Bill Cumbie, the company’s founder and Chief Technical Officer was extremely pleased by the award and noted,  “This award permits us to advance our research in critical areas and is a validation of the importance of our research.  We greatly appreciate the endorsement of our research by the Commonwealth of Virginia and the Center for Innovative Technology. We are excited to see where our research takes us.”

Pancopia Lands $750,000 Contract with NASA

HAMPTON, VA; June 8, 2016 – Pancopia, Inc. was awarded a $750,000 Phase II SBIR contract by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to create the prototype for a biological wastewater treatment system for space exploration activities, possibly including the International Space Station and other manned missions. This news comes following the successful completion of the Phase I feasibility testing in December of 2015.

Under this contract, Pancopia will finish the development of its patent-pending wastewater treatment technology for a zero-gravity environment. The system will be capable of removing 95% of the organic carbon and ammonia from the wastewater, and will serve as part of the overall system to recycle wastewater to drinking water. Presently, water comprises 92% of the cost of sustaining human life on the space station. Since it currently costs $83,000 to lift a gallon of water into space, development of a more efficient water recovery system has the potential to greatly lower operating costs.

The company is also working to adapt its process to treat municipal wastewater and septic systems, which will remove organic carbon and ammonia for one-third the cost of current technologies while reducing energy consumption by 60%.

Bill Cumbie, Pancopia’s founder and chief technical officer, is very optimistic about the contract. “After our technology’s success in Phase I, we are excited to continue development, and this Phase II contract allows us to do just that.” Mr. Cumbie was also quick to share the credit, giving recognition to the “amazing team from different universities and agencies whose combined expertise truly made the whole thing possible.”

Pancopia expects to complete Phase II in May, 2018, and continue on to Phase III commercialization of this exciting new technology.
